New Moon in Aries — article | Astrologer Coach Sonja Francis

On April 5th, at 4:50am EDT, the Moon aligns with the Sun in 15 degrees of Aries. This marks the beginning of a new Moon cycle; anything brand-new started in the next two weeks has the chance to get off to a great start. Click here to watch my New Moon video on the subject.

The New Moon in fast-paced, enthusiastic, and courageous Aries asks us to connect to our personal goals and get very clear on what we want to create over the next 28 days. This is an action-packed New Moon, with the focus on ourselves; we have a tremendous amount of energy and want to sprint — it’s a “do now, think later” energy.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac; as such, it represents new beginnings, initiation, breaking new ground, birthing new forms. An Aries New Moon is thus an especially fertile time for seeding new projects and directions.

We generally don’t know what will happen when we start something brand-new — something we have never done before — and this can stir up insecurities and nervousness, sometimes maybe even plain fear, even panic.

Aries and its ruling planet Mars correspond with the quest to develop courage — not fearlessness, but the conscious choice to act in spite of fear — some call this the “Warrior Energy”.

One of the many ways we can demonstrate courage is to….

…allow ourselves to be in the condition of “not knowing” or “beginners mind”; at these times, we are more present, and sometimes creative potential is heightened.

Ask yourself: What could I approach with “beginner’s mind”? What do I want to create in this particular “right now”, this instant of time? Could I be brave enough to take this moment to rest from needing to know?

The New Moon makes a square to the Saturn/SouthNode/Pluto alignment in Capricorn. This alignment between Saturn, Pluto, and the South Node brings our long-term business dealings into deep and sharp focus, especially when it comes to manifesting something real (tangible, sustainable, meaningful, etc.)

Further, anything dysfunctional within our businesses, governments or long-term goals calls for investigation. We are being asked to eliminate or transform anything no longer aligned with our Soul’s desire for authentic empowerment. This is for our highest good — individually and collectively — “old” dysfunctional structures need to make way for empowering, sustainable ones.

Ask yourself: What structures no longer empower me? If I’m honest, what will almost inevitably break down over the long haul, simply because it is no longer sustainable?

If I felt fully empowered from within, and absolutely passionate about life, what would I build? What would be truly meaningful to my Soul and to the collective in the long run?

The New Moon squaring this combo underlines the message that we are ready to take the next step on our path. It takes courage to rebuild and start over  — and it also becomes clear that it will take time; the message here is “take it steady”. Ask yourself: Where am I being called to take a risk and try something new?  What benefits might I reap from taking that one step at a time? What if it were possible to leverage patience, maturity, and enthusiastic risk-taking toward my long-term achievements?

What do I see that needs changing in my life? What if I brought 5% more self-responsibility to that? 5% more courage? What is the best outcome in the long-run?

Saturn in Capricorn also sextiles the Neptune/Mercury alignment in Pisces. This aspect bears a cosmic message about relating to our long-term goals in a loving, kind manner — softening our approach perhaps, releasing rigid “shoulds” and any obligations not aligned with our highest calling.

In the same spirit, we are also asked to slow down and focus on quality over quantity, sustainability over novelty, ease over force. What if we could be both productive and gentle with ourselves?

Questions you can ask yourself here: What structures might support my emotional well-being and connection to the intuitive? What commitments might connect my “ambitious self” to my “soul-self”? Might slowing down and trusting the divine timing (and flow of things) ultimately support my long-term goals?

Mars is the ruler of Aries; it’s currently in Gemini, sextiling Chiron in Aries. This presents an opportunity to connect with others and share our individual approach toward gentler leadership. We are invited to inspire others to engage in a healing process around the masculine “yang” energy — to do some healing around physical, sexual, and spiritual wounds, allowing ourselves to be human while on our path to wholeness and a larger, more purposeful life.

Chiron in Aries is all about our journey towards a healthy sense of identity, independence, and willpower; as we travel this path, we bring progressively more and more respect to ourselves and others. We are urged to become wise, peaceful warriors, who “stand watch” for the wellbeing of all concerned.

Questions you can ask yourself here: What is the next step toward becoming an increasingly healthy, strong, curious and flexible person, who is not afraid to go after their personal goals and desires, or to speak up for what needs healing in our society around the traditional masculine?

What role does anger or domination play in the traditional masculine? How do I experience those traits within or outside of me? And when? What if, as an experiment in freedom, I let go of my resistance towards anger? Even all its unhealthy expressions? Just for right now?

It’s also worth mentioning that we’ll be dealing with a lot of Station phases this month: Jupiter (starts April 2nd), Pluto (April 8th), Saturn (April 14th).

Keep in mind that these station phases create awareness; when preparing to go retrograde, they in turn prepare us to seek inner clarity and connection to the more intuitive energies within. It’s an invitation to pay attention.

Jupiter in Sagittarius also trines the New Moon, and is exalted. This might very well bring some extra expansion to our new beginnings. Jupiter also shows us where we need to seek insight by an increase in our knowledge — knowledge we can gain either through exploring life, or via higher education.

Possibility, optimism, growth (mental and spiritual): these are just some of Jupiter’s keywords…

We are definitely more aware of Jupiter’s energy until April 16th — and this awareness helps us get more connected to the “Jovian” energies within us (or lack thereof) — we get to see where we need to embrace them more fully, so that we can use them in a healthy way, without getting lost in their lower, denser versions (such as blind optimism, excess, stretching the truth, overindulgence, etc.)

Ask yourself: What am I most aware of at this time? What if I took an optimistic approach towards life itself? What mental or spiritual growth might be waiting for me? What would “courage” do?

While I’m on the subject: the Jupiter Station and Retrograde phases were covered in considerable detail in the last Monthly Forecasting Forum — and if you want to know how this planetary movement might impact you personally, feel free to purchase this webinar — we applied the Jupiter Retrograde phases to our own birth charts! Click here for more info or to purchase the recording

The next Forum will be live on April 19th and will cover the Pluto & Saturn Station and Retrograde phases in more detail in relationship to our own birth charts. To register or for more info, click here

Star or SuperStar Members will be automatically signed up for the Forums, and will receive two emails: one with a link to join the webinar live, and another with a link to download it as a video recording — so, watch out for those emails (and check your junk mail, if you don’t see it in your inbox 😉

During the upcoming Retrograde phases, it may be even more advisable than normal to keep the focus on ourselves, and to check in frequently with our inner compass. We also get a chance to see what works (and what doesn’t) in certain areas of our lives —  we can take stock, and see what needs a do-over (or at least a reassessment).

Alright… let’s turn our attention back to this New Moon and sum it all up:

Shifts are happening everywhere. It’s time to develop some courage and awareness, so ask yourself: Where do I want to step up? What if I were the master of my destiny and could keep my heart and mind open, right here, right now? If that were so, where would I choose to go next?

What might open up if, once a day for the next 28 days, I tuned into myself and simply listened to the higher vibrations of my being?

The highest expression of the Aries energy is expressed when we lead others by example and inspiration — they follow because they see our courage, our enthusiasm for life, and want to be a part of that.

Ask yourself: What if dared to lead responsibly and with integrity? What if I were the one who inspires others and teaches compassion and connection to the divine? What single, simple action step would I take right now in support of someone’s healing process, if that were true?

As best as you can, be patient and brave; listen to your inner voice and bring your unique, passionate, human Self to the world. Remember that each of us makes this journey in our own way, in our own time, so focus on yourself — your path, your truth — rather than on what lies beyond your control.

Spring is not just for “spring-cleaning” our dwelling, it’s an excellent time to “cleanse” on all levels. Ask yourself: What changes have already been in the back of my mind for weeks now? What first step looks inviting?

Remember, the ultimate goal of this New Moon is to tap into our inner warrior — the mature, protective warrior, rather than the shadow warrior who exploits and destroys — courageous, rather than combative, assertive, rather than aggressive, human, rather than trying to be a superhero.

Do you have your Ascendant (or any personal planets) in 13-17 degrees of either Aries, Libra, Capricorn or Cancer? If so, you may feel the effects of this New Moon more strongly. This is also true for those of us who have our Ascendant or Sun-sign in Leo or Cancer (the Sun rules Leo; the Moon rules Cancer).

The New Moon is also the best time to set some intentions for this month’s Moon cycle — this process is especially powerful with the New Moon in Aries — and as always, is best done soon after the New Moon becomes exact  (and definitely not during a Moon void of course)

So this month, we have two periods that are great times to set intentions: the first is the roughly seventeen hours between 4:50am and 10:15pm, Friday, April 5th; if you aren’t able to set intentions during that time period, wait until the next day — between 9:06am Saturday, April 6th, and 4:50am Sunday, April 7th, a 19.5 – hour period (as always, all times are EDT).

If you live in a timezone other than EDT (US East Coast-time), feel free to join my Facebook Fanpage or follow me on twitter. I will be posting several reminders on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to let you know that it is time to set your intentions 😉

Here’s a few bonus questions: What might emerge if I suspended my opinions, beliefs, judgments and concepts, just for a moment, here and there, now and again? What are some resolutions I could make toward inner healing or wholeness? What would be a good first action step on one of those resolutions? How might accepting my current relationship to my masculine side support me on that journey?
