New Moon in Virgo — article | Astrologer Coach Sonja Francis

On Aug. 30th at 6:37am EDT, the Moon aligns with the Sun in almost 7 degrees of Virgo. This marks the beginning of a new Moon cycle. Feel free to watch my New Moon video on the subject (I will post it by the end of by Tuesday, Aug. 27th, at the the latest 🙂

This New Moon has an abundance of planets in Virgo; in Astrology we call this a Stellium — and this one includes Mercury, the Moon, the Sun, Mars and Venus. In the astrological sense, this list is “in order” — our mind leads — and we are more aware of where our daily lives need improvement and our thought processes need investigation in general.

Ask yourself: Am I overanalyzing things? Is my inner dialog bringing me clarity at this time? If not, what might need simplifying, so I can gain more clarity? What might “simplifying my life” look like?

Mercury is also the ruler of Virgo; it is in its own sign at the time of the New Moon, and its energy is thus exalted. Mercury remains in Virgo until Sept. 14th; this gives us some time to recognize where we have ignored important symptoms, feelings, or hunches — and then to eliminate the unnecessary and/or dysfunctional.

Ask yourself: What does my mind chatter say? Is it helpful? Does it help me make decisions in alignment with my lighter vibrations, my love-vibrations? In other words: Is my mind in service to my heart?

Virgo provides an opportunity to learn both about being of service, and about what it might mean to strengthen our focus on improving our daily routines — getting organized, for example — and taking care of health matters.

This New Moon cycle will therefore be a great time to begin new projects that demand attention to detail, list-making, and taking pride in “small” accomplishments. We might start a new health regimen, perhaps by paying close attention to our diet, we could also set up specific routines that help us manage our lives in constructive and mindful ways.

Looked at another way, this cycle is all about handling the nitty-gritty details of our day-to-day life in an organized, step-by-step fashion, so we can free our minds of clutter. Where could you use more open space?

Things to watch out for: sweating the details, worrying, being extra-critical of ourselves and others when something doesn’t get done “right”.

Another great way to step into the higher vibrations of Virgo: As best as you can, recognize that humility, self-improvement, and being of service bring you closer to your inner divinity and your Soul’s path.

Ask yourself: How could I, as a Spirit-being, operate more efficiently in the physical world? Might tweaking my daily routines help? And help me be of service? What benefits might I reap if I brought 5% more discernment to distinguishing between the essential and the redundant?

Since the New Moon in Virgo also conjuncts Mercury, Mars and Venus, we might ask…

Since the New Moon in Virgo also conjuncts Mercury, Mars and Venus, we might ask ourselves the following questions: Can the masculine collaborate with the feminine? What role does my thinking play in all of this? What might be possible if, before taking an action, I regularly asked myself “Is this healthy for me?” (for my physical and emotional body, my mind, my spirit, etc…)

Chiron in Aries quincunxes the New Moon in Virgo. This calls for some inner adjustments. We are asked to develop some inner awareness around two very different urges: on the one hand, the desire to heal our relationship with the inner masculine (assertiveness/anger, leadership, taking actions), and on the other, the need to tend to our daily work or health routines.

We may feel quite uncomfortable with something in our lives over the next four weeks and be more aware of triggers and limitations connected to old childhood wounds. As best as you can, be compassionate and understanding with yourself when feelings of anger come up, even if shame follows any expressions of anger.

Ask yourself: Are there any physical, emotional, or mental issues that are asking to be healed at this time? How might 5% more compassion and understanding support my relationship with my wounded/limited Self? Instead of wanting to fix it, could I try out gently embracing the part of myself that is “less than perfect”, aka “human”? What if my attempts to fix those parts of myself were the very thing keeping me from seeing the divine perfection and gift of it all?

Uranus in Taurus trines the New Moon and all the other planets in Virgo (Mercury, Mars and Venus). Here we are invited to connect with like-minded people and learn something new about our unique talents, or our value in the world. We want to create a better future for ourselves and others and do a good job. Watch out for messages from the Universe 🙂

It will be easier to connect to things that require attention to detail, or that support our daily routines; surprisingly perhaps, we might also implement revolutionary health routines or other systems in our day to day life that honor our body and make life more enjoyable.

Ask yourself: Where could I try something new, different or unusual? What might a “breath of fresh air” bring to my daily work routines? What might breaking away from “what’s normal” in my physical world bring? What might become possible in my daily and financial lives if my network of like-minded people were even a little bigger?

Venus in Virgo opposes Neptune and Pisces — and both planets square Jupiter in Sagittarius — creating a T-square focused on Jupiter. This is an invitation to bring expansion and new perspectives to our interactions with others, while staying centered within our intuitive knowingness, and thereby discerning what works for us and what doesn’t. Impatience might be a by-product of this aspect — but moving faster or doing more is not necessarily better.

Ask yourself: How do I use my energies? Am I exhausting myself? What beliefs or assumptions are holding me back? What calls out for clarity? Where might “overly-enthused optimism” be playing out? How about universal timing? How can I balance understanding the facts with heeding my intuitive knowingness?

The empty leg of this T-square lands in Gemini; this invites us to shift our perspectives and attitudes when connecting and communicating with others — keeping an open mind and staying curious will serve us best. As best as you can, bring possibility and optimism to your conversations.

Ask yourself: What might shift if I listened with an open heart and curious mind… no matter what information I heard? Where do I tend to make assumptions? Where do I have huge expectations? What might be possible if I listened 5% more carefully to my own thoughts? To other people’s words? What if I didn’t look through that lens that makes it look like I already always know everything? What might be possible if I kept an open mind and investigated my options with a concerted but open curiosity?

Venus also trines Saturn in Capricorn. This signals a time when we don’t take connections with others lightly; we are more attracted to a long-term commitment than to a “casual” one, and bring more maturity, respect and integrity to our interactions. This is a good time to approach “elders”, authority figures, or “subject matter experts” for their input.

Ask yourself: What if I connected to others to be of service? If someone I work with had a message about the process of maturing, who might be the messenger, and what might that message be? What am I able to contribute to my long-term goals? What might someone else be able to contribute?

To sum it all up, the message of this New Moon is loud and clear: It invites us to assess the quality of our lives in all areas. It spotlights how less can be more (clutter, “busyness”, stress) and how this translates into a more satisfying and meaningful life.

Be Mindful. Dedicate yourself to what’s important with compassion in your heart! Remember that perfection is not a goal, it is a journey. Ask yourself: Where could I simplify? What if I favored progress over perfection? What if I discerned what’s truly important to me and focused there for improvements?

Again, feel free to watch my New Moon video for more info.

Do you have your Ascendant (or any personal planets) in 5-9 degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Gemini or Sagittarius? If so, you may feel the effects of this New Moon more strongly; the same is true for those with their Ascendant or Sun-sign in Leo or Cancer (the Sun rules Leo; the Moon rules Cancer).

New Moons are also the best time to set some powerful intentions for the month’s Moon cycle, this is best done soon after the New Moon becomes exact, and definitely not during a Moon void of course phase.

This month, the best time to set intentions would therefore be between 6:37am on Aug. 30th and 4:46am on Aug. 31st — and if that’s not possible there is another great time between 7:08pm on Aug. 31st and 6:37am, on Sept. 1st (EDT is the New York timezone). For more info on setting New Moon Intentions click here

If you live in a timezone other than EDT (again, that’s the US East Coast time zone), I recommend you join my Facebook Fan-page or follow me on twitter. I will post reminders on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning to let you know when it is the best time to set your intentions 😉
